Alternative to Hennessy Pure White Cognac: What to buy when HPW is out?

Hennessy Pure White Cognac has become incredibly popular. Why is that? Obviously the taste experience has a lot to do with it. This Cognac has a light, floral nose with fruitiness on the palate–it’s a subtle Cognac with delicious aromas. HPW is extra extra smooth, which makes it so delightful do drink.

Pure White Hennessy is between a VS and a VSOP age quality, relatively young in age, which is where its floral notes come from. It has become a firm favorite around the world–but especially with Cognac lovers in the US. And here’s the problem…Hennessy has decided that the only places they’re marketing HPW is in the Caribbean. (A good excuse to take a vacation, but for all of us who can’t afford to fly to Barbados: bad news!)

If you’re lucky, you’ll find the odd bottle in a liquor store (where it sells incredibly overpriced as it’s so difficult to get a hold of). And of course, Cognac-Expert has provided this golden elixir to “Henny” Pure White fans by shipping direct from Cognac to the US, thanks to our close relationship with the lovely Hennessy crew. But even our charm isn’t enough for us to get hold of enough Pure White to satisfy the demands of you guys in the US. We do our best, but sometimes even we run out of stock.

We’ve taken a closer look at some serious alternatives for that time when you need a Hennessy Pure White replacement. You never know, you might actually discover a really neat new brand.

Hennessy Pure White: What makes it unique?

So to narrow down some realistic HPW substitutes, we first put together a list of Hennessy Pure White’s characteristics.

  1. It’s an extremely smooth, light Cognac to drink. Light on the nose (the aromas don’t overpower), and delicate to taste.

  2. It combines both fruit and floral aromas and tastes.

  3. It’s a young Cognac with the perfect balance between a mature body and freshness.

  4. HPW can be enjoyed neat, over ice, with a mixer, or in a cocktail.

  5. The bottle is very cool looking. It combines urban lifestyle and classy elegance.

  6. HPW has (perhaps because of its limited availability) become extremely sought after. If you’ve got yourself a bottle, people are going to be impressed!

Cognac-Expert’s “Alternative to Hennessy Pure White-List”

After a great deal of consideration, we’ve come up with a list of alternative Cognacs to Hennessy Pure White. We took into account the ‘cool’ factor, the taste, the versatility, and, of course, the price. HPW sells for just over $100 (plus shipping), so we’ve only considered alternatives that are in the same kind of price bracket. And actually, many offer excellent value for money because they don’t command the premium that HPW does.

1. Marancheville VSOP Cognac

Marancheville is a Cognac brand we recently discovered and are loving more and more the more we taste it and compare it to other blends. The elegant bottle can keep up with the minimal chic of HPW, and–more importantly–what’s inside is a stunning, clean, fresh Cognac that you will adore. Careful, you might betray your beloved Henny…Marancheville VSOP could easily become your new favorite! It has beautiful fruit and honeysuckle aromas and a nose of sweet pastries. Like Hennessy Pure White, this Cognac is the perfect balance between power and smooth freshness.

And guess what? You can buy 2 bottles of this beauty for the price of one Pure White bottle. This blend is a Grande Champagne blend, the premier growth area.

Find Marancheville VSOP and have it delivered to your doorstep.

2. Hennessy Fine de Cognac

This elegant Cognac comes from the same cradle as Hennessy Pure White. So you’re guaranteed to have an excellent quality. Fine de Cognac is a Cognac that is very easy to drink. It can be enjoyed neat or on ice, and will develop delightful aromas.

A VSOP Cognac, this blend is slightly more mature than Hennessy Pure White but equally smooth and gentle to drink. The minimal look compares to HPW in its timeless style.

Try Hennessy Fine de Cognac and experience its fragrances and aromas of citrus and honey.

3. Bache Gabrielsen Pure & Rustic Tasting Set

Bache Gabrielsen‘s beautiful range Pure & Rustic brings us sophistication. Their Tasting Set is a great alternative to Pure White in many ways.

Bache Gabrielsen collaborates with small local producers for the artisanal Pure & Rustic range. Pushing the boundaries of Cognac labeling, this Cognac house chose to use names such as Secret Garden, Fruity Harvest, Golden Wood, and Spicy Trip to describe the blends in this set. We absolutely love this product. All four Cognacs are pale in color like Hennessy Pure White. Especially Secret Garden and Fruity Harvest compare to it taste-wise. It’ll be really fun to compare aromas between the four blends. Try a tasting among friends!

4. Bourgoin Fine Pale Cognac

This brand is new on the stage of Cognac houses, and it has gotten a lot of attention. This pale Cognac pretty much has exactly the same light golden color as Hennessy Pure White, which shows you that it hasn’t taken on too much of the oak of the barrel yet–just like the light blend that is HPW.

The age of this Cognac is a VS, slightly younger and a little punchier that Hennessy Pure White. But we think you might really enjoy this one. It looks awesome in your drinks cabinet and truly stands out.

5. Leopold Gourmel VSOP Cognac

This Leopold Gourmel offering is stunningly presented, perhaps, in our humble opinion, the best looking bottle on this list. A completely natural Cognac, it’s the epitome of delicacy and finesse.

In addition it comes from the sought after Fins Bois terroir of Cognac–a growing area known for producing subtle floral and fruity eaux-de-vie. On the nose enjoy gentle aromas of pear and white peach, while on the palate you luxuriate in the clean, fresh tastes that gently take you on the ride to a refreshing, long lasting finish.

Whatever Hennessy Pure White alternative you choose, relish the journey.  After all, one of the delights of Cognac is to discover what else is out there.  Have fun, and enjoy…

And if you simply can’t bear to be without your HPW, be sure to sign up for our email notification, so we can ping you as soon as we have more in stock.

I have tried Hennessy Pure White several times and am not sure what the hype is about. Not sure what to compare it to, but I would take Hennessy Black any day over hpw. It’s much smoother than Hennessy VS and far better tasting than hpw. Not an expert but I would like your take on Black….

Which one of these “actually” taste very similar to Hennessy Pure White and is available in the US for purchase? Are there any other spirits out there besides these?

  4. Abraham Hervey February 26, 2018 at 11:42 pm

Hennessy Black is the poorest quality of all the blends! It has a harsh bite to it! Not warm to the palate nor does it have a romantic experience with your taste buds. It is for those who drink the brand just for the namesake of the brand,

Hennessy Black was specifically created to mix. It is not a sipping Hennessy as it was not created for that purpose.
