It’s not often one gets to celebrate a 300th anniversary. So when the unique opportunity presents itself, it’s necessary to mark the milestone with something extra special.
And the house of Martell Cognac is doing just that. Not only have they already released the Martell Premier Voyage Limited Edition Cognac, the Cordon Bleu 300 and the XO Tricentenaire, but now they’ve released the Martell Assemblage Exclusif de 3 Millesimes Cognac.
This delight is released in a truly limited edition of only 3,708 bottles worldwide. And it’s a blend of three eaux-de-vies from Grande Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois. Martell say that each one ‘evokes a different period in the house’s history, according to its aromatic profile’.
The Fins Bois eaux-de-vie adds arial lightness to the blend. It provides a smooth and subtle taste, and represents the rise of Martell Cognac during the 19th century.
Of course, the Grande Champagne cognac adds powerful character to the mix, and is all about the beginnings of the brand during the 18th century. This symbolises the strong foundation of the cognac house, and all that it has built on since.
Finally, the Borderies eaux-de-vie provides a compliment to both the above with its ‘silky roundness’. This growing region of Cognac is the smallest, and is the hallmark of all of Martell’s Cognacs. The addition of this to the blend signifies the beginnings of the 20th century, a time when the famous Martell Cordon Bleu Cognac was created.
Martell Assemblage Exclusif de 3 Millesimes Cognac is presented in a beautiful wooden casket, which itself is decorated with a three-tone inlay. This symbolises the harmony of the 3 eaux-de-vie that make up the blend. And the bottle itself is a reproduction of the traditional ‘montre flasks’, used by the Cellar Master to test out samples of eaux-de-vie.
The tasting notes, according to Martell, say that the cognac is very expressive on the nose, with notes of Mirabelle plum, apricot and candied stone fruit. On the palate it’s well structured, with a round and harmonious taste. Vanilla mixes with candied fruit, and then evolves toward a lively finish of beeswax, that moves into a long and delicate ending.
We don’t yet know the price of a bottle of the limited edition Martell Assemblage Exclusif de 3 Millesimes Cognac will cost, but you can be sure we’ll update the page just as soon as we have the information.
