We’re now well into 2018 and it’s almost three months since we launched our very first, very own Sophie & Max Sélection Nº 1 X.O.–a Limited Edition Cognac available only to our beloved Cognac Expert readers.
Sélection Nº 1 was recently listed on Food & Wine as one among only 11 “Excellent New Wave Cognacs”!
We couldn’t have hoped for it to be more of a success. For this, we have our loyal customers to thank. Merci! Not to mention the brilliance that is Jacques Petit of Andre Petit & Fils Cognac, of course. He is an amazingly gifted local Cognac producer and the maker of this XO.
We have to admit, the team at Cognac Expert was very nervous, both prior to and on launch day. Here’s our blog article of the launch. But we had absolutely nothing to worry about, because Sélection Nº 1 was fully embraced by the Cognac world, and we got unbelievable feedback.
Here’s a touching comment by one our longest-standing customers:
Dear Cognac Expert Team,
I’m sorry it’s taken me a while to get this review out to you, but I wanted to thoroughly sample Selection No. 1 before providing a review. After all, the Team put a lot of time, dedication, heart and soul into this project, and deserve more than a three sentence opinion.
Let me start with my personal bias. I am a fan of Cognac-Expert, and suspected this wouldn’t just be a good cognac, but a special one. Sophie and Max likely wouldn’t have put their names on the bottle unless the cognac inside was truly singular. Cognac-Expert’s commitment to quality and total engagement with all things cognac was the red-carpet for this XO’s introduction. And, with Jacques Petit at the helm, I knew this would be a treat. It’s been a beautiful challenge to take on the responsibility of selecting a Cognac that is showcased to a global audience. We spent hours discussing and deciding on the presentation; from the bottle right down to designing the label. And then came the packing! It’s certainly been an adventure… Here’s Sophie with a mountain of bottles to send off.
And here’s our local Fed Ex delivery guy, who picks up the packages from our Chateau and sends them on their way. For most bottles, this is the start of a journey halfway around the globe.
As we draw through the first quarter of the year, we thought we’d let you know that you can still be part of Cognac Expert history. The edition run is merely 150 bottles, and once these are gone, that’s it, there will be no more. Needless to say we’re secretly scheming Sélection Nº 2…but that remains behind the scenes for now.

This tale certainly isn’t over. As our regular readers well know, we’re staunch advocates of the local artisan producers. These often family-run houses usually have generations of knowledge, not to mention wonderful stocks of truly old and rare eaux-de-vie. There’s something deliciously special about finding a real gem of a Cognac from a house that most of the world has no idea exists. Bringing these to the attention of an international audience lies at the heart of Cognac Expert. Below is an Instagram post of a friend who had a bottle shipped out to her.
Hence plans are already in place to produce Sélection Nº 2. Early plans, we admit, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as the product is due for launch.
