A reader has a Richelieu XO Cognac Fine Champagne at home. Interesting. We’ve never heard of this brand before.

This cognac actually belongs to Distell, the company that owns Bisquit Cognac: “Richelieu et Cie Ltd formed and started marketing their own brandy in South Africa.”

(If you also have a Cognac bottle you would like to sell, or you need information about age or value – send us photos and information, just submit: Use this form – but please be aware: if you don’t follow the steps precisely, we will not publish your bottle.)

We found this on the web: “Richelieu Extra Old Cognac has captured the very essence of the Ugni Blanc grape. Only brandies made from grapes grown, distilled, aged and botted in the Cognac region may carry its distinguished name. Richelieu has selected grapes from the Grande and Petite Champagne regions to bring you a decadent Fine Champagne Cognac.

Once matured in French oak for around half a century, only the best eau de vie is hand selected to become part of Richelieu’s proud heritage. The result is a soft smooth glow, and the intimacy of a fine matured, well rounded and fruity cognac.”

First off I just want to say you are running an excellent blog! I’ve thouroughly enjoyed reading up on the topic since winning the Richelieu XO Cognac this year. Now I’m quite interested in the idea of Brandy vs Cognac and am seriously contemplating a Branding Tasting in the Stellenbosch Brandy Tour Route, here in South Africa.

I just could not find the necessary information on the bottle and figured somebody could assist me, as well as determining its value. I’ve heard some very contrasting figures, and would not just want to open the bottle if its value is high.

Another reason for submitting the bottle was the fact that it was not specified per your site! I figured you would relish in the opportunity to trace yet another Cognac brand / line. And now I’ve already learned that Distill and Bisquit are linked. I was actually thinking of purchasing a bottle of Bisquit or Hennessy Cognac to sample its taste… Hmmm.

I will definately recommend your site and am thinking of getting some friends involved in Cognac, as a lot of people prefer Brandy here in SA anyway. So this will follow the line of: All Cognacs are Brandy…

If you can determine the Richelieu XO Cognac’s estimated value I would truly appreciate it.

Thank you and do continue your excellent blog!

    A South African fan
