Remy Martin Louis XIII Cognac & Cigars: A match made in heaven?
There’s no denying the joy of sipping your favourite cognac, but for those who also like a smoke, then cigars and cognac really do exist in mutual wedded bliss.
There are many cigars that are produced specifically to pair with a good cognac, and also cognacs made with the intention that they’re enjoyed with a cigar. But for the ultimate in decadence, it has to be the Gurkha ‘His Majesty’s Reserve’ Cigar.
Each box of 20 cigars is made with a special little addition: a whole bottle of Remy Martin Louis XIII Cognac. A box of these treasures will set you back a ‘mere’ $25,000 US dollars. This means each individual cigar costs a cool $1,250. And that, in anyone’s book, is a lot of money to watch going up in smoke!
But there’s no doubting the link between cognac and cigars. So much so, that many cognac houses produce cognacs for this very reason. Hine Cognac, for instance, is proud of the research they undertook to come up with Hine Cigar Reserve Cognac. They decided that they wanted to create a cognac between a VSOP and XO that “would have the body to go with most cigars in the $8 to $12 range”.
Cognac Gautier went one step further, and sent several different cognacs to Cuban cigarmakers for feedback. Based on their responses they created four blends, which all the cigarmakers blind tested, and came up with a single blend – the Gautier XO Pinar Del Rio Cigar Cognac.
Pierre Ferrand also produces a cigar cognac – the Pierre Ferrand Cigare Blend Reserve Havana.
But according to many cigar aficionados, a good XO cognac also is well suited to the task. Hennessy, Park Cognac, Martell, Remy Martin and Courvoisier’s XO blends all have the strength and age that are well-accompanied by smoking a cigar.
There are many cognacs specifically produced to combine with a cigar. These include A. de Fussigny Cigare Blend Cognac, and Bisquit Cognac’s Cohiba Extra (produced on the personal request of Fidel Castro).
And if you need any more affirmation on the link between cigars and cognac, you need look no further than the world famous Mayfair Hotel in London that have created a cigar room specifically for this very purpose.
So if you’re looking for the ideal gift for that special person in your life, and they enjoy both cognac and cigars, then perhaps one of these might just make their day.
