Our regular followers here at Cognac Expert will be well aware of the almost meteoric rise in popularity of cognac in China and other Asian countries over the past few years. This has led to industry experts proclaiming that we’ve now entered a ‘golden age’ for the cognac industry, with all predictions set only for demand and sales to rise.
One of the primary distributors of cognac in China is China Distribution Ltd. They focus on importing the premier, older cognacs into the country to satisfy the ever growing demand of the Chinese for these products. One such eaux-de-vie is Majesté Cognac, an XO created from blends aged 25 years or older.
A few years ago, Majesté Cognac was virtually unheard of in this area of the world. But with the Chinese eager to purchase the best cognacs – and prepared to pay the price – this premium blend has now become a name to be reckoned with. Now served in the top hotels and trendiest bars in both China and Hong Kong, Majesté is also a cognac the Chinese like to give as gifts on special occasions, such as Chinese New Year.
Presented in hand crafted, hand decorated, lead free crystal glass decanters, Majesté Cognac says it uses only cognacs from award winning years such as 1997, 2000 and 2003. Each bottle is also protected by a tamper proof closure device.
Interestingly it seems that cognac is mainly enjoyed in the southern provinces of China, and it’s in this area that consumers have become increasingly aware of brands, quality and price. It’s highly believed that demand will outpace supply within the next 4 to 5 years, and with China being responsible for 20 per cent of the 6.4 per cent global growth last year, this seems highly likely. After all, old cognac isn’t exactly something that can be manufactured – it happens when it happens, there’s no way to speed up the aging process.
With the Far East accounting for a third of the total cognac sales last year, companies such as China Distribution Ltd must be rubbing their hands with glee.
