Happy Birthday Hennessy! The house is a grand 250 years of age this year, and naturally, the Cognac giant is celebrating in style.
To this end, the Hennessy 250 Tour has been prepared, and it officially opened in China on March 17, 2015. This cultural event offers visitors the chance to view Hennessy through the past and present, and even gain a vision into the future thanks to creations by 11 contemporary artists.
The Hennessy 250 Tour is a travelling event, due to visit five cities around the world from March to September, 2015. First is China, at the Opera Zaha Hadid in Guangzhou. In May it moves to Russia, where the art will be on display at The New Manege in Moscow. July is the turn of the USA, at the Lincoln Center, New York, followed by the Circa Gallery in Johnannesburg, South Africa in August. The tour will end in September in the French capital, Paris at an as yet undisclosed location.
So, what delights are on offer? Well, as mentioned, there are some wonderful creations by some top modern artists. These have been divided into six ‘chapters’, each depicting historical elements of the Cognac house.
The artists include, Charles Sandison, with a chapter entitled ‘Infinitas’. The pieces illustrate the ‘birth of a dynasty’, and is a clever intertwining of art relaying the seven generations of Hennessy, including the cellar masters of the time.
Patrick Sorin has created a visual display, showing the traditions and rituals of hennessy though a window, in which he himself plays out on stage.
Anon Corbijn was tasked with creating a display that pictured the soul and ethos of the House. The end result is a portrait gallery of the faces behind what’s seen Hennessy grow into the house we know and love today.
The ‘Panoramic Scene’ by Constance Guisset is all about showcasing works from artists who hail from the five countries that the tour is visiting. They are Yang Yonglian, from China, Kisseleva from Russia, Dineo Bopape Seshee (South Africa), Daniel Arsham (USA), and Laurent Pernot (France).
And such a tour would not be complete without displays from some of the artists who’ve collaborated with Hennessy over the years to create Limited Edition bottles. These include Shepherd Fairey, Os Gemeos, Futura, Othoniel, Arik Levy and Tom Dixon.
As if all that’s not enough, there are going to be live performances and demonstrations at each of the destinations. These will be shows featuring work from local artists – something Hennessy is proud to be behind, and a testimony to the strong links the house has to the countries to which it exports.
Bernard Peillon, Hennessy’s President, says that, “Since the house was founded by Richard Hennessy in 1765, and continuing through the generations, Hennessy has shaped their reputation by constantly looking to the future, being committed and passionate, maintaining strong relationships with distant countries and cultures, and thinking globally even before the concept was invented”.
Also, we just heard that there will be a red carpet VIP LAUNCH dinner event at Le Malt Lounge in Colonia, New Jersey, on April 22, 2015. The event will be a curated cocktail reception followed by an elegant dinner. Guests will be tasting the most awaited Hennessy 250th Anniversary Blend Cognac, as well as Hennessy VSOP Cognac and XO »”>Hennessy XO Cognac. The dinner is developed by renowned chef Duke Estime who will pair food and Cognac.
The price per person for the cocktail and dinner apparently is only $75, and tickets can be booked via Evensi.com. We would totally go if we were in the New York area!
