Cars and Cognac: The Epitome of Luxury

Apparently there’s a well-known Californian movement known as ‘Cars and Coffee’. (Apologies for not knowing that such a thing existed). It’s where motorheads get together to drool over uber-vehicles, such as the newest, the biggest, the oldest, the most expensive, the vintage… You get the drift.

But when Rolls Royce does something, the luxury car maker tends to do it just a little bit differently. And they certainly did with the world’s very first “Cars and Cognac” meeting.

Of course, the cars weren’t ‘just’ cars. We’re talking a Rolls Royce Dawn and a Phantom, so certainly not your regular commuter vehicles. And from the trunk of the Phantom, which was fitted with a bespoke picnic hamper, a sommelier provided the attendees with samples of Courvoisier’s XO, advice on how to best enjoy it, and tasting notes.

This unique event took place in a private member’s club in the middle of an area of outstanding natural beauty in England, The Cotswolds. Of course, as you can imagine, this was not a meet that anyone could simply rock up to. It was strictly invite only. And, we’re guessing, that to wing one of those invites you had to be a past, present, or future customer of Rolls Royce, with a bank balance to match.

The Cognac choice

It’s probably also true that the event was sponsored in some way or other by the house of Courvoisier. And being as they’re one of the most famous Cognac houses in the world, perhaps this was a good choice of Cognac to serve.

However, if we can be the teensiest bit critical here (sorry Courvoisier), but wasn’t the choice to serve up solely Courvoisier’s XO just a little bit, well, boring? Oh, we’re going to get shot down in flames for that remark.

Yes, it’s a great Cognac. Courvoisier XO is a blend of superbly matured eaux-de-vie, each aged from around 11-25 years. It’s elegant, with some of the more unusual aromas and flavors that you don’t find in so many XOs. It’s also one of the most well-known Cognacs around the globe. And this is probably the reason it was chosen.

But, oh–people of Rolls Royce. Why oh why didn’t you include a couple of other XO offerings for your gathering of the great and the good? After all, there’s so many to choose from. If you went to all the effort of providing an expert sommelier to educate the guests, surely you’d want to show them more than a single Cognac? There’s so many great ones to choose from. They could have picked from a plethora of great XOs, such as the gold medal winning Meukow XO Extra Old, the multi-decorated De Luze XO Fine Champagne, or the superb value for money double gold medal winner, the Delamain XO Pale and Dry, for example.

Even so, it was certainly an innovative and different event. And just in case you’re wondering how you can bag an invite for the next one? Well, a purchase of a shiny new Roller might just do the trick. We might even consider offering the services of a Cognac Expert team member to assist. Well, you can’t knock a person for trying…

Car Race Circuit des Remparts, Angouleme

But, we guess, the highlight of the event were the cars, and the Cognac more of an added extra? And whilst we’re on the subject of cars, the 14-16 September 2018 sees the annual classic car race, the Circuit des Remparts, that’s held in Angouleme, just half an hour outside of Cognac. This event takes place through the roads, turns, and steep slopes within the walls of this delightful French city. Featuring a whole weekend of racing, the circuit hasn’t changed since the first race back in 1939! If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit.
