The first female cellar master of one of the ‘big four’ – Pierrette Trichet – is certainly not averse to speaking her mind. And being a woman in what has, until recently, been a distinctly male dominated industry, certainly makes her a force to be reckoned with.
Ms Trichet took the top job at Remy Martin in 2003. However, she’s quick to play not towards her gender, but towards her passion for the spirit, and the continuing legacy of the brand.
Born in Armagnac country, this daughter of winegrowers started her illustrious career with Remy Martin at the age of 20. Now 58, Trichet is clear about her vision, confident in her ability and focused about the future of Remy Martin Cognac.
She says that her work involves two major duties. “First, we have the responsibility to be like a visionary, to build so that the next generation will take over. Second, I’m the guardian of the Remy Martin style and to keep this consistency. My role is to select eau de vie, the future cognac, and then to make sure it’s aging properly in our cellars and also to create, or recreate, the Remy Martin cognac style.”

She also has much to say about the evolving cognac drinking nations such as China and India. Although she’s adamant that the style of Remy Martin cognac is not changing – indeed she says her job is to protect this style – but that what is evolving are the tastes and expectations of cognac drinkers.
To this end she says that if people wish to drink cognac in different ways, such as ‘on the rocks’ or even mixed with Coca-Cola, then that’s okay. She creates cognacs for people to enjoy, and if that’s how they choose to drink it, then at last it’s now considered far more acceptable.
A dash of Coke, anyone?

”on the rocks”? As someone that owns a brass snifter warmer, I object to that concept.
As for mixing it with coke, I think it defeats the purpose of purchasing cognac at all (unless you’re on some sort of mission to find out what coke tastes like mixed with every spirit in the world). But as long as people aren’t doing it with anything higher than VSOP I wont hassle anyone about it.
…much.
