You’ve got a bottle? We help you with finding more information and eventually value and price! One of our readers sent us this old Cognac bottle…  it is a very old James Hennessy bottle.

James Hennessy Cognac bottle

It has its original lead capsule intact imprinted with the words:

Bottled By / Lang Bros Ltd / Distillers and Wine Merchants / Glasgow

The Main label reads:

James Hennessy & Co  Liqueur  Cognac / Bottled By Lang Bros., Ltd., Glasgow

The middle label is printed with three anchors and rope (see photo). There also appears to be another label missing below the main label.

Our reader has been in contact with Lang Bros Ltd in order to shed some light on this bottle however they have been unable so far to provide any further information.  Although they have shown interest and are continuing to look into the subject.

The bottle came from an old relatives house in the Glasgow area.

Apparantly, this may be one of those ‘imitiation’ Hennessy bottles that have been produced around those days…

Oh really, how can you tell it’s a fake?

#3 Stefan on Jul 16, 2010, says:

I believe this bottle to be genuine. James Hennessy was the son of the founder Richard Hennessy. The company was initially named Hennessy’s (since 1765)but renamed after James (Jas) Hennessy in 1872. Its therefore save to state that the bottle is from after 1872The labels are the product of Lang Bros who did use nautical figures on their bottles. If the owner would like to sell this bottle I would be happy to speak with him.

I have consigned this bottle to auction at Great Western Auctions in Glasgow. They have assured me it will be going up for sale along with other spirits / wines on 27th November 2010. The initial estimate they gave me was GBP £200-£300. Is this a fair price? They also assured me there is every possibilty it may do more… :-)
